The periodic variations of a white–light flare observed with ULTRACAM

چکیده

High time resolution observations of a white–light flare on the active star EQ PegB show evidence of intensity variations with a period of ≈10 s. The period drifts to longer values during the decay phase of the flare. If the oscillation is interpreted as an impulsively–excited, standing–acoustic wave in a flare loop, the period implies a loop length of ≈1.7 Mm and ≈3.4 Mm for the case of the fundamental mode and the second harmonic, respectively. However, the small loop lengths imply a very high modulation depth making the acoustic interpretation unlikely. A more realistic interpretation may be that of a fast–MHD wave, with the modulation of the emission being due to the magnetic field. Alternatively, the variations could be due to a series of reconnection events. The periodic signature may then arise as a result of the lateral separation of individual flare loops or current sheets with oscillatory dynamics (i.e., periodic reconnection).

The X 3 Flare of 2002 July 15

An X3-class flare occurred on 2002 July 15 with white-light emission and a complex filament eruption. Observations were made in the optical continuum, H , UV continuum, microwave, and soft X-rays, as well as with high-cadence longitudinal magnetograms. Within the preflare phase, intense heating is observed accompanying upward motion of the filament. At the onset of the impulsive phase, filament...

Light and electron microscopic study of the tongue in the White-eared bulbul (Pycnonotus leucotis)

The aim of the present study was to investigate the light and electron microscopic structure of the tongue in White-eared bulbul (Pycnonotus leucotis). Six adult White-eared bulbul (3 males and 3 females) in Shahrekord district were used in the investigation. Samples of the apex, body and root of the tongue were prepared routinely for light and electron microscopic study. Results showed that th...

کاربرد الگوریتم ژنتیک و ماشین بردار پشتیبان در جستجوی پارامترهای نانوشراره‌های تاج خورشید

Nanoflares are the small impulsive sudden energy releases, due to the explosion of solar background. Thus, determination of their energies and distributions is important . Recent observations and simulation models have shown that the frequency of their energies follows power-law. According to Parker hypothesis, if these exponents are greater than critical value 2, the contributions of nanofla...

Do All Flares Have White Light Emission?

High-cadence, multiwavelength optical observations of a solar active region (NOAA 10969), obtained with the Swedish Solar Telescope, are presented. Difference imaging of white light continuum data reveals a white light brightening, 2 min in duration, linked to a co-temporal and co-spatial C2.0 flare event. The flare kernel observed in the white light images has a diameter of 300 km, thus render...

ULTRACAM observations of the black hole X - ray transient XTE J 1118 + 480 in quiescence

We present high time-resolution multicolour observations of the quiescent soft X-ray transient XTEJ1118+480 obtained with ULTRACAM. Superimposed on the double-humped continuum g ′ and i -band lightcurves are rapid flare events which typically last a few minutes. The power density spectrum of the lightcurves can be described by a broken power–law model with a break frequency at ∼2mHz or a power–...
